On Monday 21st January 2019, Active Cheshire will launch the PlayBox in Winsford and Northwich parks.

The boxes will be full of active toys (e.g. Footballs, catching sets and frisbees) for the whole community. Meaning that everyone can share and play together, whilst making effective use of local parks and open spaces. Residents local to Wharton Recreation Ground, Winsford Town Park and Northwich Verdin Park will be able to share these toys for free, signing up and unlocking the boxes to do so. They will then put the toys back, re-locking the boxes when they are done, for others to enjoy.

Monday 21st January is Blue Monday, which is known as the saddest day of the year; the PlayBox will bring joy to many as they play with the toys and equipment. The PlayBoxes will then remain in the parks allowing locals to continue playing with the toys throughout the rest of the year. During the Blue Monday launch all children will receive free giveaways to take home and on top of this, everybody who attends and signs up to unlock the PlayBoxes will receive a free raffle ticket to be in with the chance of winning an “Active Hamper”.

The Postcode Lottery funded project will help make local parks appealing to all ages, whilst bringing people together. Projects such as this allow everyone to access opportunities to be more physically active, creating future benefits to their physical and mental health, as well as their social wellbeing. This aligns with the co-created Blueprint to tackle physical inactivity in the Cheshire and Warrington subregions, formally adopted by Active Cheshire as their strategy.

Anne Boyd, CEO of Active Cheshire, had this to say about the project “Our recent strategy highlights the importance of play in getting more active and PlayBoxes are an excellent way of doing that. The PlayBoxes will also make use of the beautiful local parks and green spaces that we have available to us in Winsford and Northwich. Thank you to all our partners who made this happen, especially the Postcode Lottery. Using play to increase physical activity in the local region is a great way to boost everyone’s health and wellbeing for the 2019 new year and beyond.”

Donations of toys to the PlayBoxes have been provided from local businesses: Asda, Morrisons, New Balance, Wilko’s and Decathalon.
