Joan*, 74, is using community physical activity to combat loneliness.
During a consultation for Cheshire West and Cheshire Council, we met Joan. Joan is 74 and moved to Elton three years ago. After losing her husband a few years previous, Joan began to feel lonely, so decided to move closer to family in the Cheshire village. Joan loved being near her children and grand-children, but still felt somewhat isolated.
Joan made the decision that she needed to rely less on her family and get out into the community.
Joan plucked up the courage to join an exercise class for over 50s at her local community centre and she loved it!
Not only could she get active and keep moving, but she also started to meet like-minded individuals.
From the exercise class, Joan has now made friends with other members of the community. She now plans to continue her exercise class, but also take up offers of other community activities, including arts and crafts.
Without that class, Joan didn’t know if she’d have the courage to get out into the community, but now she does and her days are quickly filling up!
