Cheshire & Warrington School Games - Local school talent shines through!

Active Cheshire, local School Games Organisers and close to 1000 competitors came together on the 8th July to Macclesfield Leisure Centre and the Fallibroome Academy to take part in this year’s Sainsbury’s Cheshire and Warrington Summer School Games Festival. Schools from across Cheshire and Warrington’s 8 School Games areas took part in and contributed to a fantastic celebration of sport in the sub-region.

Adding inspiration, energy and drive on the day was former Commonwealth gold medal winning gymnast, Craig Heap, who as guest Sporting Champion, supported everyone to compete to their very best ability. Whilst the weather was decidedly soggy at times, spirits weren’t dampened and the athletes threw themselves into their competitions with enormous enthusiasm.

An event of this size is complex to organise, so a workforce of an additional 100 young leaders volunteered their skills to record results, look after competitors, work as a media team and generally ensure the smooth running of the games.  There was also lots of help on hand from local New Balance volunteers who helped run the Active Cheshire activity area with tennis and football inflatables for the participants and supporters to use between competitions. National sponsors Sainsbury’s provided a sport themed photobooth and Everybody Sport & Recreation, venue hosts, provided the young people with further information of how they can stay active over the summer holidays..

Anne Boyd, CEO of Active Cheshire said, ”It’s been a massive privilege to make this year’s Cheshire and Warrington School Games Festival happen.  The competitors showed truly outstanding sporting behaviour and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, from the fun of the opening ceremony through to cheering each other on and celebrating successes when the medals were awarded.  Seeing children enjoying sport and activity in this enjoyable and supportive environment embodies what Active Cheshire is about and hopefully contribute towards them having happy active habits for life.”

Mark Wheelton, Corporate Commissioning Manager for leisure in Cheshire East, attended and said, “This has been a wonderful day.  It’s been superb to see a gathering of so many enthusiastic and dedicated children here competing and enjoying themselves. The weather could have caused us issues but everyone rose above it to create a great atmosphere.  We have been very pleased to host the games here in Macclesfield, give the participants a great welcome and show everyone the top level facilities that we have.”

Active Cheshire are now looking for venues and facility holders who would like to host/co-host the games in 2016, if you’d like to be part of this great event next year, contact or call 01606 330212.
